How the number is made

A useful number should show its working. EuroTake calculates an annual payroll result in your browser, then divides it into a monthly average. Your payslip can differ when holiday allowance or bonuses are paid separately.

Tax is worked out for one earner: joint taxation and married bands are not modelled. Child benefit is counted where the country pays a standard amount. Buying a car, school fees, eating out, holidays and recreation are not in the expenses.

Method

Questions about comparing two places

How is take-home pay worked out?

From each country’s published tax and contribution rules, for the tax year shown. Each side then says how far its figure was checked: against standard cases from official sources, such as the country’s own tax calculator, tables or worked examples; against cases from a named reference engine, not the tax authority, where that is all there is; or not at all, and then it says it is a modelled scenario. A figure the cases do not reach, such as a salary above the highest one checked, is called modelled too.

What does “left each month” mean?

Your pay after tax, minus rent and everyday costs for the same household in each place: the same kind of home, the same contents, only the local prices differ. If you know your own rent, enter it and it replaces ours.

What if my city is not in the list?

Choose its region, or its country for national figures. Where part of the income tax is set locally, the places we model are listed by name with their own rates: Denmark’s and Sweden’s municipalities, Switzerland’s cantons, Spain’s autonomous communities, and Italy’s regions and largest comuni. A whole country uses the same default as its own page. Some local taxes are not modelled, such as Italy’s other comuni, Belgium’s communal surcharge and the Basque and Navarrese tax in Spain, and each country’s page says what its figure leaves out. If where you live now is not listed, choose “My city isn’t listed” and type in your own figures.

Is what I type sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, and your figures stay in the link’s fragment, the part of a web address that is never sent to a server. A link you share shows its salary and assumptions to whoever opens it.

Does it cost anything, or need an account?

No. It is free, has no account and no ads, and nobody pays for a better ranking or a different number.
